DCA project staff in close coordination with UNODC staff have joined the world Drug Day’s campaign to celebrate in Kandahar province. DCA/UNODC project “Food Security, Livelihoods Protection and Alternative Development through Licit Means in Kandahar Province, South Afghanistan” to address drug challenges in health and the humanitarian crises will celebrate the day on Sunday 26th June 2022, at Shaikhrohani village in Dand district of Kandahar province. In celebration of the day DCA female staff conducted training for 15 female participants who were already selected from the village, on proper milking of their animals, considering sanitation during milking and other aspects of their lives. During the training staff emphasized the importance of the continuation of licit agricultural activities, such as raising milk cows, other animals, and the damage caused by the cultivation of illicit crops.
At the end of the training each of the 15 female participants received a milking and sanitation kit. Each kit consisted of a churning machine, milking bucket, big size bowls, milking tank, plastic boots, gloves, apron, plastic chair, milking fabric, washing liquid, and hand washing soap.
DCA staff celebrated the international day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking as world drug day. In close coordination with the agriculture department of the district, and representative of Shaikhrohani village in Dand district, 30 farmers from the village were invited. During the gathering to celebrate the day, awareness sessions were organised with the farmers in the presence of the head of the Agriculture Extension Department of Dand district. The meeting was inaugurated with an opening speech from the DCA project manager in which he mentioned the importance of cultivation of licit agricultural crops, and the damage caused by cultivating and trafficking illicit crops. The participants were requested to cultivate licit crops. This was followed by a speech from the head of the Extension Department of the district in which he emphasized that farmers “cultivate licit crops as an alternative for illicit crops especially poppy what is banned now”. He thanked the project for organizing such awareness training, and requested the project to increase the activities in the district promoting an alternative to the cultivation of illicit crops.
The celebration was followed by speech from the technical staff of DCA in which they emphasized the importance of the cultivation of licit crops such as Wheat and Maize as alternative crops to poppy cultivation, which is illicit. The celebration ended with the distribution of refreshments to the participants.
At the end the participants, promised not to cultivate the illicit crops and had some suggestions to be considered:
– Control of orchard diseases
– Providing improved seeds for the cereal crops
