Humanitarian Crisis in Afghanistan: Overview of the Livestock Sector
OCHA’s (2022i) humanitarian needs overview indicated that Afghanistan is at the debacle of humanitarian crisis due to natural disasters (eg. Drought flooding), war, COVID–19 pandemic and political change. Over 24.4 million people (around 60%) need humanitarian support in 2022 with 22% women, 54% children and 8.3% disabled. Of the total 34 provinces, 29 are in crisis according to the intersectoral analysis made by JIAF (Joint Intersectoral Analysis Framework). More than 507,000 people displaced and 785,000 are deported returnees mostly from Pakistan and Iran.
Afghan women and girls are uniquely vulnerable due to interwoven risks associated with the conflict and structure of the new IEA government. There is no more ministry of women affairs and limited interest of prioritizing the rights of women at this critical juncture.
Of the rural livelihoods sectors, livestock was the most hit by the multiple crisis in Afghanistan. The poor condition of pasture and high prices of fodder due to drought has left more than 3million livestock under critical risks leading to sales of livestock at a price given by traders particularly in winter season. Over 64% of the rural population reported that they are facing challenges of raising livestock. IDPs in particular have lost their livestock while displaced from their origins making them with no livelihoods options. The dry–spell has also induced water crisis leading to lack of water for animals and human beings. This is aggravated by the impacts of climate change that reduced the amount of underground water and water flowing from the mountains.
